Some general STUFF
Just some general questions and advice if anyone has any words of wisdom....
First: I have a Canon 40D camera and a new ipod classic. I have read on the old www
that it is possible with the 5th generation ipod to transfer pictures
(via an adapter) DIRECTLY from the camera to the ipod without having to
stop off at the laptop and itunes. Has anyone done this? Does it
work?
I don't want to take my laptop with us and I will need to empty my data
card every couple of days so i can take more pictures. I was looking
at storage devise like the Sanho Hyperdrive, but why drop another $300 if ipod will do the work.
Second: We will be renting a car. Likely it will have a CD player not
a cassette so my usual means to listen to the ipod in a car not my own
will not work. here in the states I have tried the unit that plugs
into the ipod and uses a radio station tuner to listen. Here in Boston
that NEVER works since every frequency is full. I don't even know if
the device will work in the U.K.
Does anyone have any suggestions on using the ipod in a car? Particularly in Europe.
Third: We heard a mouse. We baited the electronic trap. We awoke
Saturday morning to find a mouse running in circles in the sink, around
and around and around. Husband went to find a glove to remove the
critter and...wait for it...he ran down the disposal shute. Ewwwwww!
No!!!! We didn't turn it on.
husband hovered over the hole with a set of tongs at the ready.
Foolish thing ran right between and CLIP, husband snagged him. He has
been in the mouse relocation program and currently resides behind the
garage with the litter of skulls.
Fourth:
If, IF, I brave bringing my laptop along with me, how easy will it be
to get WiFi connections in Northeast, northwest, southwest england and
far western Wales? We are not talking London here, we are talking
rather countrified, remote locations. Is it worth lugging this beast
around?
Fifth:
Carry-ons International flights. Can we bring noshies? I know we
can't bring liquid, but would they dump our sandwiches in the trash if
we brought them through in our carry-ons?
Sixth: Want to help us with kitchen decorating advice? Here we are, fire away!
Thanks in advance for all of your wisdom!

No travel advice but I dig your kitchen. I agree with AT white paint. Or even a pale dove grey. I think painted brick looks wonderful, btw.

WiFi: Probably available in cities and / or in fancy hotels. Maybe in places in smaller towns. In the wilds of West Wales or wilds anywhere else, forget it. You'd be lucky to get a phone signal even.

The ipod will probably be an issue outside of the US. I am not sure I would be willing to trust it with an adapter; I have had perfectly good adapters blow up hair driers so why mess with an ipod? We bought a US ipod for our German Nanny and the warrantee does not cross borders. They were pretty clear.
With regard to food, forget about it. It will be a very long time before, if ever, we cross through security with anything other than 3 oz bottles of shampoo in quart size zip lock bags - especially international and they aren't messing around. Purchase what you must once you're through security and make sure you've got plenty of water.
A word of warning on international security from a frequent overseas traveller: Don't push the envelope while passing through security or you may find yourself with an escort between that gate and the next (I didn't particularly mind the escort but I did mind the strip search).

Ipod in car, get one of those cassette adapters. You can borrow ours if you want. We're not using it right now, as we don't yet have our car.
Kitchen help? Boy do I have a recommendation for you. Cassia is an OLD OLD friend of mine, and she's incredibly talented and fun as hell. And she is one EXCELLENT cook. You would love her. http://www.cassiadesign.com
Plenty of wifi places all over the UK. They are very wired.
Don't know about noshies, but as long as they aren't liquid, I don't see why not.

Jo,
I've traveled with my Ipod all over the world with absolutely no problem and as you know what I do for a living, you know my Ipod is my lifeline as it has all my test tunes for the systems on it. Heck, I even had it with the transformer and the funky Europe adapter and then to a strange adapter from the hotel in Russia.
You are cool with taking your ipod

I live in London, and my comment above is my experience of wifi, having travelled with my laptop to Argyllshire and other rural parts of Scotland. Even around Berkshire, the only well wired places were coffee shops and hotels, and that's hardly the 'wilds'.

The FM radio device for the iPod does work in the UK too - my brother-in-law has one. Depends where you are as to how well it works!
Wifi - totally depends where you're staying!
Photos - just get a really big memory card! How many photos are you going to take?

I've flown with every type of non-liquid/syrup/yogurt food, including internationally, and never had a problem as long as you eat it during the flight so as not to create a problem at customs.
Yum! Makes the flight so much more fun/manageable.
