The Crush

A brief sweet tale of two of my students.

I have a girl in my class, we'll call her Angel.  Angel comes to class every week with an aide, a young girl in high school. Angel is a beautiful girl with the thickest most gorgeous hair you have ever seen and she is always impeccably dressed, even for cooking class.  I do not know the nature of Angel's issues, but she can't speak very well, is easily distracted and has difficulty meeting your gaze or communicating directly with you.  I've had her now for several sessions so I've become familiar with her personality and even though Angel has never spoken to me or acknowledged me directly rather than ask the aide to get Angel to do something now, I just speak directly to Angel even though I am never really sure if she is listening or not.  Her aide sits right by her side and keeps her on track with the recipes, helps her with her knife work and keeps an eye on her at the stove.

I have another student, we'll call him Johnny.  Johnny lives in a local orphanage who send him to cooking class with us.  He is sweet, good natured, curious and over the last 6 weeks he has really come out of his shell.

Last week I heard Angel's aide say to Johnny that Angel liked his shirt.  He sort of blushed a bit and said thank you.  I thought it was really sweet because I was never really sure if Angel paid attention to the other kids in class or not.  They are a pretty rambunctious group.  I have had many of them for over 2 years now so they are all quite comfortable with each other and talk incessantly, but Angel never seems to be involved in anything they say.

This week I was at the front of the kitchen talking to everyone as they arrived, setting things up, listening to the stories they were telling when in walked Angel, she went directly up to Johnny and tapped him on the shoulder, leaned in and said hi.  I think it was the sweetest thing I have ever seen.  I do believe I might be witnessing a crush!
